A brief look at the many ways (big & small) that we are always #ForNina. Our lives are forever changed,
but we continue to be grateful for the privilege of having her.
2019: David Goldman & The Boston Marathon
One of Nina's biggest fans and strongest supporters, our dear friend, David Goldman raised $12,500 for One Mission, a pediatric cancer charity when he ran the Boston Marathon for in her honor.
2019: LMP Scholar-Athlete Award
The Scholar Athlete Award at Lake Mary Prep was renamed the Nina Karlinsky Award, and the first recipients were Lauryn Dawson and Eric Pawlowski.
2019: Pugs In a Blanket by J.J Howard
Nina's favorite English teacher and study hall sounding board from Lake Mary Prep, J.J. Howard created a main character in her latest middle school book, Pugs in a Blanket based on Nina, named the character Nina and dedicated the book to her.
2019: Dance Marathon & Night for Nina
It is truly hard to describe in a few words how Dance Marathon felt. In 26.2 hours all emotions were felt; a whirlwind of love, perseverance, acceptance, hope, peace, sadness, and bittersweet tears encompassed many of the tired, amazing, inspiring students who stood for the kids. In preparation for the event team #ForNina worked tirelessly to spread awareness, raise money, garner hope, support each other, and continue to love and fight FTK and For Nina. It was worth every moment when it was announced during Dance Marathon that there would be Night For Nina, a set time from 12:00 am to 6:10 am in which Dance Marathon dedicated time to remember Nina and all her amazing efforts FTK, but to raise money FTK as well. We were given a goal: raise $21,000 during these hours in honor of Nina's 21st birthday. In what felt like a delirium, love, and miracles conquered all and we reached and exceeded the goal with over $25,000 dollars in donations. In the words of Erica:
THIS! For Nina! Thank you, DM at UF for honoring Nina for all that she was to The Kids, and all that she was to the world. She was an ELP, Family Relations Captain, patient at Shands, and all she wanted was to keep on... moving, dancing, playing with the kids, bettering the world, giving everyone the best advice, cracking the best jokes, eating spicy tuna and açaí bowls, beating every opponent at word crack, soccer, scrabble, monopoly, poker, etc etc etc.
Night for Nina ran from midnight until 6:10 a.m. with a goal of raising $21,000 in honor of Nina’s 21st bday on June 10.
The DM at UF community raised over $25,000 during this time, and every penny goes to people and kids like Nina, who have so much to give.
We are so grateful, DM directors, for honoring Nina in such a beautiful and impactful way.
It was an honor to celebrate Nina and who she was in this way, an event that was truly inspiring. DM at UF raised $3,230,025 in total - a truly monumental and impactful feat. The DM community worked hard, and it shows. In exciting news: team #ForNina won first place in our bracket for the most donations raised (as only competitive Nina would want/expect). A huge thank you to Erica Karlinsky for being the backbone of our team. Her inspirational strength, grit, and determination to push our small but mighty team to the top encouraged us to work harder, and fundraise more. In Brooke's words: Nina’s legacy is strong and will be carried with DM forever. FTK and #ForNina always.
2018: LMP Soccer Tribute ForNina
In the first soccer game of the season, Lake Mary Prep, Nina's high school Alma Mater, honored her participation on the soccer team by painting the field, wearing orange jersey's with her number 8 on the back, and by stopping the clock to honor Nina. The Lake Mary Prep administration and athletic department will be honoring Nina every year, with a ForNina Night.
"The evening was a beautiful reminder of the impact Nina made on everyone she knew. We raised $1500 from ForNina hat and socks sales for Dance Marathon, getting us that much closer to our goal of $20000 For The Kids!!! We will be eternally grateful to Kathy Benefiel, Frankie Delgado, and Justin Varitek, Lake Mary Prep athletic department’s pillar of strength and kindness for seeing this through, for our family, and ForNina" - Erica Karlinsky
2018: Dance Marathon Miracle Market
UF's Miracle Market was hosted by and for DM captains, planners, overalls, and emerging leaders. Thank you to everyone who supported Nina’s Memorial Page with the purchase of a For❤️Nina hat, socks or laptop sticker.
2018: Kendra Scott ForNina Event
Nina’s friends and family came out to support, remember and love her at the Kendra Scott store at Millenia Mall and even took the time to order over the phone. None of this would have been as beautiful as it was without Taylor Ethridge and her amazing staff at Kendra Scott, Millenia Mall.
"It was a beautiful and joyful evening. So many people are wearing Nina’s ring, birthstone, and favorite Kendra Scott pieces. We shared stories, memories, and her friends filled me in on the background of some of the pictures we had displayed around the store.
Nina was pretty adamant about NOT being seen as a “cancer patient”. The pictures were all of Nina as her funny, goofy, loving, happy, ridiculous self. And the 20% that is going to help the kids through Dance Marathon/Children’s Miracle Network was the most important part of the evening. I think we all made her proud" - Erica Karlinsky
